On Good Friday, April 19, Lakeside Downtown will host the Art of the Cross event for the fifth time.

“Art of the Cross began 2014 as a unique way to meditate on the events of Good Friday by combining the Stations of the Cross with live artistic expression,” says Robert White, a member of the Art of the Cross organizing committee.

The Stations of the Cross, found traditionally in Catholic or Orthodox churches, depict the different stages, or steps, taken by Jesus on his journey from the Garden of Gethsemane to the tomb. The Art of the Cross adds to that spiritual journey the live creation of artistic expressions of the individual stations, located throughout the church building.

This year’s art include:

  • Brian Johnston—digital photographic imaging
  • Sylvia Woods—acrylic painting
  • Phil Irish—large-scale multi-media art
  • Nicole Ensing Band and Gina Jacklin—music and multi-media art
  • Sherry Morse—fabric art
  • Chris Cuthill—multi-media

New this year is the addition of the literary arts found in a booklet of meditative readings by area authors such as Sara Davison, Gregg Elliott, Glynis Belec, Brianna Bell and Corrie Lyn Shoemaker.

The free event takes place from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Lakeside Downtown (75 Norfolk St.) and also features a station for youth, where they will be able to express themselves creatively.
