NEWS RELEASE

GUELPH PUBLIC LIBRARY

*************************
The Guelph Public Library is thrilled to participate in this year's Oak Tree Project - a charitable program launched by the Mactaggart Team to strengthen the roots of our community's not-for–profit sector.

The library is the most widely used facility in Guelph, offering a wealth of accessible resources, services, programs, training, and technologies to promote a vibrant community.

Over 3,300 people enter our doors each day seeking tools to enrich, improve, and transform their lives. Our library welcomes the entire community – ensuring all Guelphites have access to a variety of community connections and opportunities to enhance their wellbeing and sense of belonging, such as:
  • helping newcomers to our community and country access resources, build language skills, and connect through English as a Second Language conversation circles and groups;
  • keeping seniors and those with other barriers connected to important community and cultural resources through our outreach services and specialized programming;
  • providing accessible technologies and services to those with physical impairments;
  • ensuring resources to everyone regardless of socio-economic status or background;
  • offering access to computers and internet for those who would otherwise not have access;
  • providing archival collections and resources that connect us to our past, and programming, technologies, resources, and services that promote a better future.
Funds from the Oak Tree Project would enable a 'Story Teller in Residence' program at the Guelph Public Library, which would focus on Indigenous cultures and the Canadian experience, as we embark on Canada's 150th anniversary of Confederation.

Through which, Guelphites would have the opportunity to connect with this important part of our heritage, and promote inclusion and understanding of the various cultural groups and identities that make up our vibrant community and country.

From now until July 17, 2017, everyone (staff, friends, family & customers) will have the chance to vote for the Guelph Public Library's 'Making Canada Stronger' project by sharing your library stories and experiences.

These stories – be they text, photos, video, or audio – should illustrate how the library is building a stronger community where everyone can belong and thrive. Each testimonial counts as a vote in the first round and charities who receive the most votes will move onto the second round.

Visit the library's Oak Tree Profile at http://www.oaktreeguelph.ca/nominations-2017 and together, let's share the value and importance of the library in our community today because #LibrariesMatter!
