Local Theology on Tap event takes place Tuesday night at The Albion.

The subject of legendary Canadian Catholic philosopher, Jean Vanier – the founder of the worldwide L’Arche community, and considered a living saint by many – will be on tap this evening during the first Theology on Tap event of 2017.

Theology on Tap takes the discussion of faith, religion and spirituality to the pub, a popular gathering place in most communities.

Last year, author Michael Higgins wrote a short and popular biography on Vanier entitled Jean Vanier: Logician of the Heart. The 110-page volume was published in Canada by Novalis. Higgins will be on hand at Theology on Tap to share insights from his book about Vanier, and to facilitate discussion.

Higgins described Vanier as one of the most influential writers and thinkers of the last century, and a spiritual mentor for millions around the world.

In a world wary of religion, Vanier’s life and writings help a great many become people of faith, Higgins said in a recent article in Prairie Messenger.

Vanier started the L’Arche community in 1964 for people with intellectual disabilities and those who care for them. He believes that all life is valuable, and that each individual can reach their potential, especially when living in small faith communities rooted in friendship and mutual respect.

There will be free food and musical entertainment by the Celtic band, House of Good Cheer at Tuesday’s Theology on Tap. You purchase your own beverage.

Vanier is the author of many books on spirituality and service to humanity, including Tears of Silence, From Brokenness to Community, and Becoming Human. He is a member of the Order of Canada, and has received honours for his humanitarian work from governments around the world.

There are 29 L’Arche homes in Canada, including nine in Ontario.

Theology on Tap Guelph began running an occasional series of events back in September. The events are open to everyone. The event happens in a number of communities in several countries, and began through the efforts of local Catholic dioceses.

"We like to choose topics of conversation that will hopefully both inspire and nourish people at both the head and the heart level," said event organizer Heather Harrison in an email. "And which encourage healthy dialogue, so that we can ultimately build relationships and opportunities to learn from one another and grow."

The purpose of the event, she added, is to "welcome people from all walks of life into a comfortable setting that encourages fruitful dialogue on topics of conversation which might not otherwise be spoken about in public venues."

Plans are in the works for another event on Tuesday March 7 at The Albion.

Theology on Tap Guelph takes place between 7 and 9 p.m. at The Albion, 49 Norfolk St.
