Local elementary student a finalist for national writing competition

A local young author has made the national short list in a student writing competition held by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Ethan Zheng, a student at École Arbour Vista Public School, was named as a finalist in CBC’s The First Page student writing competition. 

For the contest, students are asked to write the first page of a novel set 150 years in the future.

In his entry, titled Trapped, Ethan wrote about the aftermath of nuclear war and a search for survivors in the ruins of Guelph circa 2167.

Trapped is one of 10 finalists in the Grades 7 to 9 category of the contest.

An additional 10 pieces were selected in the Grades 10 to 12 category. One winner from each category will be announced on CBC Radio’s q on Jan. 24.

Winners will be chosen by Young Adult writer Erin Bow, author of The Scorpion Rules.

The winning authors each receive OwlCrate, a book subscription service for one year, while their schools will receive 50 Young Adult novels for their library.
