A new supermarket is coming to Guelph.

Longos, the Ontario-based, family-owned grocery chain said it plans to open a store in Guelph in 2017.

Spokesperson Rob Koss said in an e-mail that the store would be in Guelph in the spring of next year on the southwest corner of the Gordon Gordon Street/Clair Road intersection.

Longos mentioned the new Guelph store in a press release Monday highlighting the chain's 60th anniversary activities. It currently operates 29 stores in the Greater Toronto Area. The Longos stores that are closest to Guelph are located in Milton and Burlington. The chain plans to open a 30th store in Ancaster later this year.

"There are also plans to open two additional locations in 2017 in Guelph and Ajax," said the press release.

Rumours had been circulating for some time that a Longos was coming to the Clair Road/Gordon Street intersection, the final corner of that commercial node to be developed.

The first Longos store opened in 1956. They offer a full range of products and services, including a pharmacy, at most locations and are known for their to-go salad and hot food offerings.
