A 44-year-old man was taken into custody after an hours-long standoff Sunday after police received a call about a male with a firearm.

Guelph Police said the call of a male with a firearm came in at 3:24 p.m.

As officers attended an address on Elizabeth Street, a portion of that street between Huron and Duke streets was closed off for a number of hours.

The department's Tactical Unit was on the scene at the time, as well as the Police Emergency Command Unit.

By 6:11 p.m., a suspect was taken into custody without incident.

The man left the house on his own accord and through police negotiations, said police.

As a result of the incident, a 44-year-old Guelph male was charged with pointing a firearm, weapons dangerous and three counts of uttering a threat to cause death.

He will appear in court on June 18.
