A man hit a woman and was bitten by a dog Monday afternoon in front of Old Quebec Street Mall. A 38-year-old Guelph man was treated for a dog bite wound and arrested.

The afternoon incident was witnessed by pedestrians in an area of the city that tends to draw a crowd on a warm, sunny day.

Police received a call related to an assault complaint at around 2:20 p.m. Monday afternoon. It appears that a female walking two dogs was approached by a man who she was familiar with.

Guelph Police describe a volatile scene in which the man allegedly kicked and punched one of the dogs. The breed of the dog is unknown.

The female intervened and was punched in the face, falling to sidewalk. One of her dogs then retaliated, biting the man in the arm. Injured, the man fled the scene on foot. He was soon located and arrested. A laceration on his left arm was treated at Guelph General Hospital.

Sonny Downey, 38, of Guelph has been charged with assault. He will appear in court on June 14, 2016.
