Police standoff on Yarmouth Street ends peacefully (UPDATED: 12:45 PM)

Man surrenders to police without incident

A seven hour standoff on Yarmouth Street ended peacefully around noon Thursday with the arrest of a young man.

The man has barricaded himself in an apartment on the upper floor of a house at 62 Yarmouth St.

Police negotiators spoke to the man, who appeared to be in his early 20s, and talked him down the stairs.

He exited the rear of the building wearing a baseball cap and Toronto Blue Jays t-shirt with "BAUTISTA" on the back. He was quietly handcuffed and placed in the back of a police cruiser before being driven away.

His identity and specific charges are not yet known.

Guelph Police Const. Bryan Dean said police responded to a noise complant just before 5 a.m. Thursday morning. It turned out to be a domestic dispute.

Dean said a female was out of the apartment by the time police arrived but the man barricaded himself in the unit, which is on the upper floor of a century home divided into four units.

Yarmouth Street was closed to traffic throughout the morning.

The police tactical squad, canine unit and police negotiators are all on the scene.
