Mayor Cam Guthrie has called a special meeting of Guelph City Council for Monday to try and save the Downtown Dining District.

The special car-free zone around the Macdonell Street/Wyndham Street intersection is scheduled to end on Monday. On Thursday members of the dining district said attempts to get the district extended further had been rejected by city staff.

At 8:20 p.m. Thursday the mayor tweeted the following:

"I have called a special #Guelph City Council meeting for this coming Monday (Sept 21st) at 6pm, specifically to have a vote of Council to save the #DiningDistrict and patio opportunities in @DowntownGuelph. Who’s with me?"

Earlier in the day the mayor retweeted media reports regarding Thursday's developments and tweeted "Not on my watch" in regards to staff's refusal to extend it further.

Monday's video council meeting starts at 6 p.m.

Delegations will be allowed.
