Empowering library staff to deliver STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, music) programming and teach digital literacy skills to our community is a key objective of the Guelph Public Library’s current strategic plan.

The library recently held a naming competition for its new iPal® robot, which was unveiled on Friday, March 22, 2019 at the Main Library’s Itty Bitty Storytime. Guelph children were able to get up-close-and-personal with the library’s new robot.

Chosen by library Tech Bar staff from over 101 unique names, seven-year-old Kayla A. won the contest with her suggested name of Beepbot. Standing at three and half feet tall, this robot created by AvatarMind can move, dance and sing using its arms, sensors, speakers and facial expressions.

The robot is designed to help kids learn life skills such as socialization, reading, spelling, mathematics and coding. It also provides children with a chance to experience the latest educational technology.

Meg Forestell- Page, Supervisor of Programming and Digital Services, shares, “The library and iPal® are partnering to ensure our community has access to the latest technologies. This is just one way that we are bridging the gap for our customers.”

The library also provides spaces where the whole community can interact, share and learn together. The Main Library’s Tech Bar (100 Norfolk Street) allows everyone a chance to get up-close-and-personal with the latest technology including 3D printing, virtual reality and so much more! Drop by the library today and explore something new.
