The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) has stepped in to take on the care of four farm animals who were surrendered by their owner, when they could no longer care for them. Three horses (two miniatures and a thoroughbred) along with a pig are now receiving much needed medical care at a farm with one of GHS’s foster homes.
All the animals needed immediate care for their hooves, which were overgrown and causing them pain. The thoroughbred horse is extremely underweight, and likely suffering from a variety of internal parasites, which are now being treated.
The pot belly pig is very overweight, causing limited mobility, painful joints and skin issues. All the animals require dental procedures and general veterinary care. GHS is estimating their total care will cost more than $3,500.
“We are so fortunate to have a large network of support, so that we can quickly help with the care of these animals,” says Adrienne McBride, Executive Director of GHS.
“This is a great reminder to our community that we help all animals from domestic rabbits and guinea pigs, to dogs and cats, to wildlife, to large farm animals. We can care for all animals thanks to the generosity of our community. These horses and pig will all receive the care they desperately need thanks to donor support.”
In 2018, the Guelph Humane Society helped find homes for more than 15 farm animals, including chickens, horses and pigs. Once these horses and pigs have received all their necessary medical care and GHS learns more about their personalities, GHS can begin to look for their adoptive homes.
