Monday night blaze was abandoned farmhouse (6 photos)

Eastview Road blaze pulled in fire crews from four different fire halls

Monday night's fire on the eastern edge of Guelph turned out to be an old farmhouse that has been abandoned for several years, fire officials said.

Fire crews from three Guelph fire stations as well as crews from the Guelph-Eramosa Fire Department responded to a residential fire around 9:15 p.m. on Monday night.

The fire was at 7793 Eastview Rd., located midway between Watson Parkway and Jones Baseline.

Firefighters arrived to find the abandoned house fully engulfed. The fire was brought under control quickly and there were no injuries.

The house was gutted but the brick walls remained intact.

The boarded-up house appeared to be over 100 years old but has been vacant for many years.

The lot was overgrown, a nearby barn had collapsed years ago and there appeared to be some evidence of squatters having used the premises at some point.

With no maintained laneway and the house sitting roughly 300 yards back of the road, firefighters had to deal with snow, ice and mud as they relayed water to the fire scene.

Eastview Road was closed from 10 p.m. Monday to roughly 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Fire crews remained on the scene Tuesday morning to monitor the scene.
