A new park and trail in the south end will be named in recognition of local Black veterans who fought during the First World War.

City council unanimously approved the commemorative names of four recreational city properties on Monday, as recommended by the naming committee which received more than 100 submissions from the public.

They are:

Courtney, Goines and Mallott Park (158 Poppy Dr.) – named after Henry Francis Courtney, Victor Goines, Gordon Goines and Tom Mallott, members of Canada’s first and only segregated, all-Black, non-combatant unit known as the Black Battalion

No. 2 Construction Battalion Trail (located within the park at 158 Poppy Dr.) – in recognition of the unit Courtney, Goines and Mallott were part of

San Giorgio Morgeto Park (104 Oliver St.) – named for the area of Italy from which many people emigrated following the Second World War

Hammill Park (51 Skinner Dr.) – in memory of Eileen and Ken Hammill, who contributed to the community in many ways, including as president of the Guelph Historical Society in the 1960s and a 30-year member of the Guelph Public Library Board (Eileen), as well as serving for 29 years on city council and founding the Guelph Community Foundation (Ken).
