New south end rec centre has a price tag

Budget forecast asks for $68 million in 2021 to build the new facility, although final design has not yet finished

The proposed new south end recreation centre has a price tag: $68 million.

The city’s 2020 capital budget and 2021-2029 capital budget forecast calls for a $68 million for the facility in the 2021 capital budget.

Another $587,000 is asked for in 2022 for “equipment growth.”

While final detailed design and council approval for the facility isn’t planned until early 2020, early plans called for a 15,0000 square-metre facility that would include a twin pad arena and 25 metre swimming pool.

It will be located behind Bishop Macdonell high school on Poppy Drive.

City budget documents say $8.8 million of the cost of the new facility will come via tax-related debt financing and $28 million via development charges.

The city’s 2020 capital budget is forecast at $151.6 million, 75 per cent higher than in 2019.

A total of 39 per cent of the 2020 capital budget would be funded via taxes. The rest through reserve funds, development charges, grants and other minor sources.

In addition to the $151.6 million, the 2020 proposed budget would lead to an additional $1.5 million in operating expenses in 2021.

The complete budget documents can be found here.

Staff will present the budget, and delegations on the 2020 capital budget, will be heard at the Oct. 23 meeting of council.
