Nine Guelph companies named among top Waterloo-area employers

Criteria include work atmosphere, benefits, time off, communications, training and more

Nearly one-third of the top 30 employers in the Waterloo area can be found in Guelph, a recent ranking indicates. Nine of them are either headquartered in the city or have offices here.

Announced by Mediacorp Canada Inc. on Thursday, the rankings are based on workplace atmosphere, employee benefits, time off, communications, performance management, training and skills development, and community involvement.

Guelph companies to make the list, which was presented alphabetically, are:

  • Danby Products Ltd. – employees share in the company’s success through an annual profit-sharing plan; company has a charitable program focused on helping sponsor and resettle new Canadians and refugees; and the company offers a hybrid working model that allows some employees to work off-site up to three days per week.
  • Denso Manufacturing Canada Inc. – employees are offered up to $6,000 per year in tuition subsidies for apprenticeships and training programs; and retirement planning assistance is available.
  • Farm Mutual Reinsurance Plan Inc. / Farm Mutual Re – employees provided with retirement planning assistance; reimbursement program for home office furniture for employees who work from home at least once per week; up to 10 paid six days provided annually, which can be used for personal illness or caring for family members.
  • Corporation of the City of Guelph – new parents provided with top-up parental leave to 75 per cent of their salary for 15 weeks; retirement planning assistance provided; recognition of employee accomplishments.
  • OCAS Application Services Inc. – tuition subsidies for training courses related to their current position (up to $2,500); new parents provided with top-up parental leave to 75 per cent of their salary for a full year; compassionate leave top-up to 100 per cent of salary for four weeks; four weeks starting vacation allowance (up to six weeks); and up to five days of paid time off during the winter holidays and up to four days during the summer.
  • Reid’s Heritage Construction – company contributions to retirement plans; cost of living allowance for eligible employees; recruitment bonus of $1,500 given for each successful hire; tuition subsidies up to $2,500 for courses related and indirectly related to an employee’s current position.
  • Skyline Group of Companies – new parents provided with top-up parental leave to 100 per cent of their salary for 26 weeks, with adoptive parents given 100 per cent top-up for 11 weeks; matching RSP plan for employees, along with retirement planning assistance; a year-end bonus program for employees; and worker engagement through social activities.
  • Sleeman Breweries Ltd. – company supported 66 organizations and charitable initiatives in the past year; tuition subsidies up to $4,000 per year; and a free “beer privilege.”
  • System 1 Canada ULC – tuition subsidies for courses related to employees’ current position; 3.5 weeks of starting vacation allowance, with up to seven paid days off during the winter holiday season; profit-sharing and deferred profit-sharing plans provided; and year-end bonuses.
