No deal on 'Dragon's Den' for Guelph councillor

They liked The Salamander, but they didn't like Bell's evaluation of his company

The Dragons were breathing fire on Guelph city councillor Bob Bell Thursday night.

Bell appeared on the hit CBC television program Dragon's Den, seeking an investor in The Salamander, a bicycle that converts into a stroller made by Guelph-based Wike, the company Bell founded and is the majority shareholder in.

He was seeking $1 million for 33 per cent of his company.

That evaluation didn't go over well with the Dragons, who loved the product, just not what Bell had evaluated the company at.

"From a perspective as an investment... I can't get my head wrapped around the evaluation. It's insane," said longtime Dragon Arlene Dickinson.

"I like your product, but I hate your business acumen. I'm sorry," Dickinson said to Bell.

Dragon Manjit Minhas said she couldn't come to grips with Bell's "math hallucinations... totally ridiculous," Minhas said.

One got the impression Bell was looking more for the exposure that being on the show brings than a deal itself. He said last time his company had a product on Dragon's Den, five years ago, Canadian sales increased 30 per cent.

All five Dragons passed on the deal.
