No injuries reported at nursing home fire

Firefighters quickly extinguish fire that guts sixth floor unit

There were no injuries reported in a fire which gutted a unit at a Guelph retirement home Sunday afternoon.

The Guelph Fire Department responded to an alarm at the Ellington -- part of the Elliott complex on Metcalfe Street -- about 3:15 p.m. Deputy fire chief John Osborne said crews encountered "significant smoke" as they climbed the stairs to the sixth floor where they discovered an active fire in one of the units.

The fire was quickly knocked down. There was nobody in the affected unit at the time.

Osborne said other tenants on the sixth floor and in the units below the fire were evacuated, while other residents of the building were asked to "shelter in place."

The deputy chief said other units on the sixth floor sustained some smoke damage, while units on the fifth floor will have some water damage. Osborne said approximately 20 residents would not be able to immediately return to their units as the clean-up continued.

Fire prevention officials were working Sunday afternoon to determine a cause.
