No, your Windows program is not about to expire

WELLINGTON COUNTY – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Wellington County Detachment are once again reminding all residents about the Windows computer scam after police investigated an incident that occurred at an address in the Town of Erin, Wellington County.

On June 4, 2016 at approximately 12:42 p.m., police received a call from a concerned homeowner after she had received a message on her computer advising that the Windows program was about to expire and to call the number provided immediately. 

The victim called the number and provided the person on the phone with all of her personal information as well as her address, banking information and credit card number and remote access to her computer.

Police are reminding people that computer scams still exist. If you receive this message do not call the number provided and give anyone your personal information. It’s a SCAM.

Computer users are reminded, that unless you initiate the call and know for certain the number you are calling is legitimate, do not allow anyone access to your computer.   

Don’t give out personal, banking or credit card information to anyone unless you are sure of whom you are dealing with. Change your passwords frequently as well.

Tips To Protect Yourself:

  • Never download anti-virus software from a pop-up or link sent to you through an e-mail.
  • Update your anti-virus software often and scan your computer for viruses regularly.
  • Don’t click on links or attachments in e-mails sent to you by someone you don’t know.
  • Turn on your browser’s pop-up blocking feature.
  • Never click on a pop up that claims your computer has a virus.

If you received a call from someone indicating that they are calling from Microsoft, please contact your local police service and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or http://www.antifraudcentre.ca.
