Opening of Guelph sports fields and diamonds delayed

Late ice storm and saturated fields lead to delay in opening

Last week's ice storm has delayed the official opening of the city’s sports fields and baseball diamonds.

The new target date is May 11 for ball diamonds and May 18 for sports fields.

"Delaying the official opening by about 11 days will help us maintain the integrity of our sports fields and provide safe playing conditions for our users," said the city on its web site.

Despite warmer weather, the city said soil conditions will be saturated and it will take some time for the ground to dry.

"We are working with our affected sports user groups to reschedule or refund bookings," the city said.

Tennis and beach volleyball courts are not impacted and will open as scheduled on April 30.
