What is May Day?

A day celebrated around the world as International Workers’ Day—where we lay down our tools and come together for liberation and justice.

“It is a remembrance of class struggle and resistance. It commemorates the Haymarket Martyrs of Chicago who were framed—and executed—for their anarchist ideas and fighting for the eight hour day. Since the 1890s workers have marked Mayday all across the world.

The world has changed since the 1880s - but the more things change, the more they stay the same. We still live in a world where exploitation rules, and where the police and media are tools in the hands of the rich and powerful.” — Anna Key.

But today, this struggle isn’t just about resistance at work. People from across our communities—migrants, indigenous people, racialized people, queer and trans people, prison abolitionists, environmentalists, and peoples united in the struggle for justice everywhere stand together for May Day—the symbol of our common fight for liberation and justice.

May Day in Guelph

Guelph District Labour Council, along with our comrades in our community, is calling for the formation of a May Day Coalition in Guelph to hold a May Day March and Rally in the city, on Attawandaron territory, to:

  • Stand together in solidarity, across our organizations and communities.
  • Bring the struggles in our city to the forefront.
  • Build new connections, networks, and bridges between communities.
  • Remember those who’ve come before us and their contributions to our fight.
  • Embolden each other and strengthen our resistance in Guelph and beyond.
