Over 1,000 Guelphites come together for Mayor's Tree Lighting event (11 photos)

Funds collected to go in support of the Guelph Humane Society

Over a thousand Guelphites came together and were all smiles to witness the lighting of Guelph’s official Christmas tree.

The Mayor’s Tree Lighting event Saturday night on Market Square saw residents enjoying complimentary hot chocolate by realtor Natasha Pedersen, singing Christmas carols along with local band Valet Jazz Quartet accompanying singer Bridget Walsh and observing an ice sculpture demonstration by IceCulture.

This year, the donations collected at the event were in support of the Guelph Humane Society’s campaign, Unleashing Hope that aims to raise enough funds to complete the $10 million purpose-built new facility for the GHS on Hanlon Creek Blvd. Funds collected will also go toward day to day operation activities at the GHS.

“2019 has been a very big year for the Guelph Humane Society,” said Chair of the Guelph Humane Society, Shane Bateman.

“We are very grateful to the mayor and to the city hall for including us tonight to spread the good news about what’s going to happen with us this year.”

Bateman said that getting this far toward their goal has been a major community effort.

“You all mean to much to us and we’re all so grateful for all the things you do to help us,” said Bateman about the Guelph community.

“Happy Holidays to Guelph and all our supporters in the community.”
