The Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) will have to layoff 23 staff as the province moves to merge 20 health care agencies into one.

The local LHIN will also not fill six vacant positions.

Travis Kann, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health confirmed the layoffs to KitchenerToday.com on Wednesday, adding none of the impacted positions provided direct patient care.

The Ford government refers to the jobs that are being eliminated as "back-office positions".

When you look at the entire province, over 400 jobs are being eliminated, with about the same number of vacant positions not being filled.

The province is consolidating 14 local health integration networks, Cancer Care Ontario, eHealth Ontario and other agencies into a new organization called Ontario Health.

By doing so, it's estimated the move will save $350 million a year by 2021-22, and a senior official said recently that $250 million will be saved this year.

During last year's election, Premier Doug Ford repeatedly promised that not a single person would lose their job under his government.
