Tracks remain closed as police continue investigation

Guelph Police continue to investigate after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train Thursday afternoon.

Const. Christ Probst said that the incident occurred around 3 p.m. on the section of rail tracks between Victoria Road and Stevenson Street.

The train came to a stop beside the parking lot of Angelino's Fresh Choice Market.

It remained stopped on the tracks at 5:45 p.m. and was expected to remain there for several more hours as police continued their investigation.

It consisted of three locomotives and roughly 50 freight cars.

Train workers could be seen leaving the train and heading to waiting CN Rail vehicles that arrived on the scene around 5 p.m.

"Around 3 p.m. Guelph police were notified of a serious incident that occurred that involved a train and a pedestrian. At this time we've initiated a reconstruction of the scene, which is standard operating procedure," Probst said.

No details of the victim were released. Probst said police were working on notifying next-of-kin, which he said was a priority.

"At this time we believe that this is not a suspicious incident, however the investigation is in its early stages," Probst said.

"I can't say anything about the deceased until we have notified next-of-kin."

He said the collision closer to the Victoria Road end of that section of tracks.

GO Transit notified passengers via social media that their service was ending in Georgetown for the time being and passengers to Guelph and Kitchener would be bussed from Georgetown to those locations
