Guelph Police are investigating a report of raw chicken covered in “what seemed to be antifreeze” left near a trail in a south end park on Tuesday evening.

According to a Facebook post, a woman was walking her dog off-leash at Preservation Park – off Kortright Road West – when her dog found three “raw chicken cutlets soaked in what seemed to be antifreeze.”

She noted that ants that were on the chicken had all died.

The dog walker notified police as well as the Guelph Humane Society.

Const. Kyle Grant, public liaison officer for Guelph Police Service, confirmed the incident. He said an officer went up to the park shortly after 7 p.m. and removed the chicken for disposal.

“There was a substance poured onto the chicken that the police did find. We’re unsure exactly what type of substance it was,” he told GuelphToday.

It’s also unclear why the chicken was left in the park, he said, noting the investigation is ongoing.

“Whenever you’re out with a dog, whether they’re on-leash or in an off-leash area, to just be very vigilant that you check the surroundings and you make sure that there is nothing your dog can get into as far as food or anything like that,” Grant added. “It’s always better to take a safety first type of approach.”

Based on the information available to him, Grant could not confirm the presence of dead ants on the chicken.
