Police investigating death near Arthur and Wellington Streets (update, 3 photos)

Story will be updated as information becomes available

An effort was underway Thursday morning to recover the body of a deceased male found near a train bridge at the intersection of Wellington and Arthur streets at the edge of downtown Guelph.

Const. Josh Fraser of the Guelph Police Service said the body was found below a steep incline near the bank of the Speed River after a passer-by  called 911 about a man in distress at about 7:30 a.m.

"Emergency services responded and did find a deceased person," said Fraser.

The investigation is in its early stages, said Fraser. Police are not yet providing the age of the deceased male.

Fraser said the death will be considered suspicious until such a time that foul play is either confirmed or disproved.

The Guelph Fire Department assisted in the recovery of the body due to the location.

"Due to the location of where the deceased was found, we need to remove them from the scene and continue the investigation," said Fraser early Thursday. By noon the body had been removed from the scene.

The Guelph Police Service stated via Twitter Thursday morning that officers are currently attending the area of Arthur Street and Wellington Street in regard to a deceased person investigation.
