Police issue advisory after child found playing with discarded needle

Recently the Guelph Police received a report that a child had found a discarded needle in bushes near a playground on Neeve Street and was playing with it when the parents realized. The child was not harmed in this incident.

What should you do if you come across a needle on public property?

If you are a member of the community and you find a needle/syringe on public property, Stay Sharp provides site-specific needle pick up Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

To report a needle on public property, please contact: HIV/AIDS Resources and Community Health (ARCH) 89 Dawson Road, Unit 115, Guelph, ON N1H 1B1 519-763-2255 ext. 151. (Please leave your name and contact information for follow up.)

You can also contact the Guelph Police at 519-824-1212 and we can safely dispose of the syringe(s) for you.

However, if you choose to dispose of a needle yourself, here are tips on how to do it:

  1. Use tongs or pliers to pick needles up.
  2. Store the needles in a hard plastic container with a lid, such as an empty peanut butter or jam jar.
  3. Mark the container with the word "needle."

Remember that it is important to teach your child never to touch a needle or a syringe, and to tell an adult if they find one.
