Police make arrest in human trafficking case

Human trafficking refers to the exploitation of a person at the hands of another; it involves the recruitment, transportation and/or exercising control, direction or influence over the movements of a person typically through sexual exploitation.

Across Canada, women and young girls are targeted based on their vulnerability and exploited into the sex trade.

On February 7, 2016, the Guelph Police entered into an investigation regarding an allegation of human trafficking of an adult female.

The responsible male was arrested by Petrolia OPP on February 8, 2016 and returned to Guelph.

A 33-year-old male from Quebec has been charged with trafficking in persons, material benefit, procuring sexual services, advertising sexual services, assault, assault with a weapon, motor vehicle theft, mischief under $5,000 and two counts of utter threats to cause death.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing on February 9, 2016.
