Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health is alerting officials in Wellington County, Dufferin County and the City of Guelph that Environment Canada is forecasting a cold snap and anticipates issuing an extreme cold warning for Thursday evening that will last until Sunday.

Extreme cold warnings are issued by Environment Canada when the temperature including wind chill is expected to reach minus 30°C for at least two hours or longer.

When wind chill reaches minus 30°C, risk of frostbite increases significantly. Frostbite can cause permanent damage and in severe cases can result in amputation. Prolonged exposure to extreme cold can result in hypothermia, which can be life threatening.

“Temperatures are going to be extremely low and vulnerable family members including infants and the elderly could be at risk. Watch the weather reports and prepare for extreme cold,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, medical officer of health and CEO of Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health.

“Fortunately, shelters in the area are able to meet local need at this time. Since they support residents who are most vulnerable to cold because of inadequate housing, you might consider how you can support the work of a shelter in your community.”

Remember to check in with vulnerable family members and neighbours when it’s very cold to make sure they are safe. For more information about extreme cold weather precautions visit www.wdgpublichealth.ca.
