North Pandemic Groove, 2014 Sapporo Jazz Festival winners, return to Eden Mills stage

EDEN MILLS/ACTON - For six years, Eden Mills has welcomed the winners of the Sapporo International Jazz Festival competition as an energizing fanfare for summer.

This year we are excited to announce that last year’s North Pandemic Groove returns with a wonderful twist.

Pianist Kudo Takuto will join them.

The Kudo Takuto Trio was the first group to come from Sapporo to Canada in 2010.

The performance takes place at the Eden Mills Community Hall on Sunday, June 26 at 8 p.m.

If you haven’t experienced this inspiring, one-of-a-kind musical event, don’t miss it.

Every year, the winners of the Sapporo Competition are invited to perform at the Toronto Jazz Festival.

This year the group will perform in the Youth Jazz Showcase on the Toronto Star Stage in Nathan Phillips Square at 12:30 (noon) on Saturday, July 2.

They will also tour to Hamilton and Midland.

Nassagaweya impresario John Cripton has been a judge at the Sapporo Competition since 2009.

Of North Pandemic Groove, he says: “The Quartet came first out of 300 participating ensembles.  North Pandemic Groove really stood out in the competition.  These artists represent the very promising future of jazz in Japan.”

He looks forward to hearing Kudo Takuto again, one of the first young Japanese jazz musicians to catch his eye in Sapporo in 2009, and to hearing the new, added element of Takuto’s pianistic strength along with North Pandemic Groove’s sound.

North Pandemic Groove musicians are Takezo Yamada (trumpet), Shunsuke Ochi (electric bass), Kudo Takuto (piano) and Taihei Kuroda (drums).  (Guitarist Yuya Monma is not able to join this tour)

They are all in their twenties and come from the northern island of Hokkaido in Japan.

The group’s main musical focus is jazz, funk and fusion.

In 2015 the group produced its first CD entitled North Pandemic Groove with the support of the Sapporo Jazz Festival.

Eden Mills audiences always enjoy the opportunity to hear these artists early in their careers in the intimate and acoustically excellent Community Hall.

These concerts are fund-raisers for the Eden Mills Community Hall.
