NEWS RELEASE

ORILLIA – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is advising the public that scammers are using an OPP phone number to make threatening and harassing phone calls to individuals.

These scammers are claiming to be from immigration and are telling you to send them money or you will risk deportation.

The most recent calls have taken place this morning and the phone number that shows on call display is (705) 329-6111.  The OPP does not make phone calls from this number so if it shows up on your screen it is a scam.

This scam, described by the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre as “Call ID spoofing,” is a common way that scammers disguise their calls so you believe it is coming from a trusted or credible caller.

The OPP is warning people to not trust your call display. You should always be suspicious of anyone who is calling you claiming to represent a company or government agency seeking your personal information.

Never give out personal information and do not send money to a person you have not verified the identity of.

If you receive one of these calls, please hang up and report it to your local police service or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-395-8501.
