Sidewalk work hard to navigate

Improvements to downtown walkways continue

Work continued this week on improvements to downtown sidewalks.

A concrete crew turned a section of Wyndham Street’s east side into a kind of obstacle course for pedestrians, as deteriorating brick inlays were removed and replaced with smooth concrete.

An array of orange road pylons was set up aimed at guiding walkers through and around the work. But some nevertheless stumbled over or stepped on the fresh concrete, eliciting loud groans from the workers who job it was to keep surfaces immaculate.

A system of boards over the strips of fresh concrete was also devised.

Replacement of the brick inlays has been completed on the west side of Wyndham Street.

Work has been ongoing on downtown sidewalks throughout April, ahead of the busy road construction season. Aging concrete planters were removed at the intersection of Wyndham and Macdonell streets just over a week ago, with smooth surfaces replacing them. Those surfaces are expected to hold outdoor patios during the warm season.

There were also walkway improvements made to St. George’s Square.
