Silvercreek skate park fenced off, surveillance camera added

Fencing has also been erected around the Norm Jary skate park

City staff are installing fencing to surround the Norm Jary and Silvercreek skate parks.

The fencing is being erected in response to the province's expanded COVID-19 restrictions, which also affect basketball courts, tennis courts and some other similar amenities.

A restriction on play structures was initially announced by the province on Friday, but rescinded soon after.

The fencing will remain up even once the restrictions are lifted to allow security staff to manage the number of people using the skate parks, said a news release from the city on Thursday. That change will allow the city to manage attendance in a similar was to how numbers were kept in check in the winter at the Market Square skating rink.

Capacity limits will be announced at a later date after the city receives further instruction from the province.

“As soon as provincial regulations allow us to reopen skate parks, we want people use them safely; share the space, keep your distance, and have fun,” said Colleen Clack, deputy chief administrative officer for Guelph’s Public Services, in the release.

A security camera has recently been placed in the Silvercreek skate park in order to discourage vandalism and graffiti, said the release.
