CITY OF GUELPH

GUELPH, ONT. - April 28, 2017 - The City has finished repairing the water main break on Silvercreek Parkway and water is being restored to customers who were affected by this break. The road will reopen once road repairs are complete later today.

The water main repair on Speedvale Road will continue late into the evening. The City expects the road will reopen tomorrow.

A third minor water main break occurred on Willow Road near Thistle Road just before 9 a.m. this morning. The City is monitoring this break until it can be repaired tomorrow. Traffic interruptions resulting from this repair will be communicated on the City’s social media accounts as soon as they are known tomorrow.

“It’s not uncommon for there to be a chain of effects like this when you have a big water main break,” said Wayne Galliher, Division Manager of Water Services for the City. “One big break can put more pressure on nearby mains and sometimes results in other breaks.”

Residents and businesses serviced from the water mains under repair may experience no or limited water pressure and discoloured water caused by the disruption of naturally occurring mineral sediments in the water main pipes. Drinking small amounts of discoloured water is unlikely to cause health issues. However, the City recommends waiting until water runs clear before drinking it. To clear discoloured water, run a cold water tap for five to fifteen minutes.

The City apologizes for any inconvenience noise and lights may cause to those living or working in the area as we continue the Speedvale Road repair late into the evening tonight.

Background

Two large water main breaks occurred on Speedvale Avenue—between Silvercreek Parkway and Dawson Road—and on Silvercreek Parkway—between Speedvale Avenue and Campbell Road—at around 1 a.m. this morning.

The City will provide an update on guelph.ca and social media should anything change, or once repairs are complete.
