At Smitten Apparel, every day is Earth Day. After all, the very concept of consignment is to reduce and reuse. Dedicated owner, Holly Mastrogiacomo, is extremely passionate about this idea. “The landfills are full with items that don’t need to be there,” she insists. “Hangers, dry cleaning bags, clothes – these things can all be repurposed and recycled.”
As Mastrogiacomo and her loyal boutique clientele have come to learn, there is a big difference between style and fashion; one is eternal while the other is fleeting. Or even more to the point, one is earth-friendly while the other is extremely harmful to our planet’s sustainability. “I feel passionate about teaching the younger generation that ‘reusing’ is the way of the future,” says Mastrogiacomo. “Shop what is already out there and say ‘no’ to fast fashion!”
One can find an equal amount of environmental zeal in Renná Bruce, renowned author of Jazlyn J and the Recycled Rabbit. Her series of inspiring children’s books (of which there are over 20!), encourage healthy discussions and lessons around any number of important ideas. From kindness to empathy to what actually matters in life, Bruce’s spunky ‘Jazlyn J’ character has what it takes to truly motivate kids.
It’s no surprise then that Mastrogiamcomo and Bruce forged a connection that quickly turned into action with their upcoming event celebrating Earth Day. Inside the bright and friendly atmosphere Smitten Apparel always offers, a spotlight will be shone on Jazlyn J and the Recycled Rabbit while Bruce and Mastrogiacomo teach everyone how to turn their old t-shirts into reusable tote bags!
