St. Patrick's Day Stuff Swap happens Saturday

Guelph Tool Library and Two Rivers Neighbourhood Group team up on a swap meet this weekend

People get a chance to swap their old stuff for someone else's old stuff Saturday at the St.Patrick's Day Stuff Swap.

Craft supplies, building materials, fabric and sewing supplies, gardening tools, clothing, accessories, kitchen and home goods - pretty much anything other than furniture and food - are welcome at the event, which goes from noon to 4 p.m. at the Guelph Tool Library in the former Tytler Public School on Ontario Street.

"We don't have room for furniture, but other than that it's pretty broad," said Stephanie Clarke of the Guelph Tool Library, which has joined forces with the Two Rivers Neighbourhood Group to put the event on.

People can bring their items early, if possible, or bring them Saturday, Clarke said.

"We haven't done one before. I think there's been some smaller swaps before, but nothing this broad," Clarke said.

"It's more for people who have maybe amassed certain collections that they want to go to someone through trading rather than donating it to a thrift store and have somebody buy it."

A pay-what-you-can donation (suggested $5) is also requested for those taking part in the event.

"We'd like to get people to bring their items in this week so that we can get them sorted, but it looks like most things are going to be coming in with the contributors on Saturday," she said.

"Basically we will set things up so that they are divided by item type or category."

Clarke used to work in the textile community, where swaps were pretty common, she said.

She said people are welcome to take whatever they like at the swap and anything that's not claimed will be divided up between other community groups and Habitat For Humanity's Re-Store.

"We've got a plan in place for any un-swapped goods, so people won't have to take things home if they don't get taken," Clarke said.
