An altercation on Carden Street in broad daylight Thursday afternoon left a male victim with a severe stab wound.

Guelph Police spokesperson Con. Mike Gatto said Friday morning it is not yet known if the two men involved knew each other, but it is likely.

Guelph Police responded to the incident just after 1:20 p.m. Police said in a press release Friday morning that the victim needed several stitches to close the stab wound.

A 33-year-old man was identified and located by police officers at around 5:25 p.m. He has been charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, assault with a weapon, and assault causing bodily harm. The man is in custody, and is expected in bail court today.

Carden Street is one of the busier streets in downtown Guelph, a high-traffic area for pedestrians. Gatto said it is unusual for a violent incident like this one to take place in the afternoon.

“It’s definitely not the norm,” he said. “If it’s going to happen it’s more often in the evening, when there is alcohol involved.”

The investigation is continuing.
