Station expansion behind schedule but progressing

Delays due to unknown telephone line and weather

Three weeks behind schedule, the Guelph Police Services headquarters at 15 Wyndham Street has lately seen some significant progress.

The three-year expansion and renovation project is being carried out to address contemporary health and safety standards, to replace aging equipment, and to provide an appropriate level of space now and in the future for the growing service.

In recent weeks, backfilling and waterproofing of foundation walls is being undertaken, a staircase wall and foundation is underway on the west wing, and the west wing corridor is being framed and boarded. The installation of heating lines, a heat pump, boiler piping and venting, and gas piping is all part of the current work schedule.

The general contractor of the project, Jasper Construction, recently announced that the work was three weeks behind schedule due to unexpected site conditions and the weather, according to the city’s website.

The topographical survey undertaken for the project did not initially detect an important telephone line. Excavation was delayed to accommodate the relocation of the line. About eight days of construction time was lost due to the weather.

According to the city, efforts are underway to bring the project back on schedule.

Back in 2014, city council approved a $34.1 million budget for the project. Jasper Construction’s proposal for the structural work came in just under $25.9 million.

The project is being funded through development charges ($14.8 million), the police capital reserve ($3 million) and tax funded debt ($16.3 million).
