Strong smell of gas late Thursday morning temporarily closes Carden Street (4 photos)

Carbon monoxide readings of about 40 parts per million were detected

A portion of Carden Street was temporarily closed late Thursday morning as firefighters from Guelph Fire Department responded to a call for a smell of gas at the 39 Carden Street bistro.

Employees of 39 Carden called 911 when they arrived for work and saw smoke and smelled a strong odour of gas, said Capt. Adam Schmidt of the Guelph Fire Department.

A complement of three fire trucks and a command vehicle attended the scene as firefighters attempted to isolate the source of the gas at 39 Carden and the adjacent buildings.

Firefighters determined the source of the odour was a gas stove in the restaurant’s kitchen, turned it off and vented the building.

Schmidt said carbon monoxide readings of about 40 parts per million were detected.

The two employees were unharmed and did the right thing by calling 911 when they smelled gas, said Schmidt.

“That’s what we are here for,” he said.

The call came in at about 11:11 a.m. and Carden Street was reopened about an hour later.
