UPPER GRAND DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

Beautiful works of art will be on display this spring at the Wellington County Museum and Archives (WCMA), which plays host to student art exhibit Zoongeheshkwaad.

Zoongeheshkwaad will feature art by elementary and high school students of the Upper Grand District School Board and the Wellington Catholic School Board.

It’s the second year the WCMA has held the student exhibit. This year, 30 schools are expected to participate.

The exhibit will feature more than 100 pieces of student art inspired by First Nations, Métis, and Inuit culture and art.

“Zoongeheshkwaad promotes equality and diversity in the classroom as well as opening students’ minds to new ways of learning,” said WCMA curator Susan Dunlop.

The opening reception for the exhibit will be held on April 28, which will also feature an artisan marketplace with vendors selling a variety of goods. The exhibit runs until June 19.

The exhibit is a product of the community based Turtle Island Heritage Festival, which celebrates First Nations, Métis and Inuit culture through a series of workshops for students.

This year’s festival runs from April 26 -29 and will host 1,200 students at the museum.

Last year more than 600 students attended the festival, with another 1,000 on a waiting list. So this year’s festival was extended to a four-day event to accommodate the demand.

“The museum is honoured to support this quality of programming and works with the school boards and community partners to make it happen,” said Libby Walker, WCMA activity programmer.

OPENING RECEPTION DETAILS:

  • DATE: Thursday April 28, 2016

  • TIME: 7 p.m.

  • PLACE: WCMA, 0536 Wellington Road 18, Fergus
