'Suspicious item' found. Police evacuate area (9:20 p.m. update)

The package and its contents were detonated by police

9:20 p.m. update

The suspicious package was removed from the building by robotic device and inspected by an Explosive Disposal Unit officer in protective gear.

The package was then detonated by police.

It is unknown at this time what its contents were.

They will be sent for forensic testing.

All roads in the area have been cleared and are now open to the public.

7:15 p.m. update

The suspicious item in question is located at 75 Farquhar Street, the home of At Home Group Realty Services.

The Waterloo Regional Police Explosive Disposal Unit is currently on scene, and an officer is being fitted with protective gear.

Original 6:15 p.m. Guelph Police Service release

The Guelph Police are currently on scene at a business on Farquhar Street investigating the report of a suspicious item.

Police have created a safety perimeter which includes Farquhar Street, Wyndham Street, Surrey Street and Carden Street.  

Waterloo Regional Police Service is assisting in the investigation.

The residents and employees of neighbouring businesses and homes within the perimeter have been evacuated.

Citizens are requested to refrain from attending the area which covers a one block radius.
