'The World Remembers' at Guelph Museums

Guelph Museums joins 60 other locations across Canada and around the world in presenting The World Remembers, a nationwide commemoration of the First World War. Leading up to Remembrance Day, The World Remembers, a digital memorial, will display the names of 1,003,167 names of those killed in 1918, including those registered as official war deaths from 1919 to 1922.

The World Remembers commemorates the millions of soldiers, nurses, and other military personnel killed during the First World War from Canada and 15 other participating nations. The project respects the losses on both sides of the conflict, and looks to the future with hope and understanding.

More than 23,731 Canadian names will appear in the 2018 display as well as 979,436 others from the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Germany, the United States, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, South Africa, Turkey, Slovenia, China and the British Indian Army.

Each name will appear one by one at an exact day, hour and minute found on The World Remembers website. Viewers are encouraged to search the names to explore the history behind each name.

The World Remembers is a Canadian non-profit organization whose purpose is to build and facilitate this initiative.

Names will be displayed via monitor at McCrae House during regular museum hours, Tuesday to Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Guelph Civic Museum, Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until the conclusion of the presentation at sunset on Nov. 11.

McCrae House is located at 108 Water St., Guelph. Guelph Civic Museum is located at 52 Norfolk St., Guelph.
