The trial of Michelle Hanson, accused in the death of her three-year-old son Kaden in 2018, is moving to Guelph.
The Dufferin County woman was arrested in relation to a February 2018 incident that saw Kaden Young swept into the Grand River and drown.
His body was discovered several weeks later in the river near Belwood.
A judge recently approved the change of venue – from Orangeville to Guelph – and the trial is expected to begin next March. The judge ruled media reports on the incident would make it difficult to get a fair jury trial in the jurisdiction the incident happened.
The Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Guelph confirmed the relocation of the trial, but said no firm dates have yet been set.
According to police reports at the time, Kaden was swept away by the fast-moving water flow during a flood after a vehicle moved past a road closure sign in Amaranth.
The boy’s body was found beneath a bridge near Belwood Lake two months later, following a massive search effort that included hundreds of volunteers.
Hanson is charged with impaired driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death.
