Following an unusually dry July, between 50 to 100 mm of rainfall has fallen across much of the upper Grand River watershed over the first week of August leading to increases in flows within many rivers and streams.
The Grand River Conservation Authority’s (GRCA) major reservoirs have captured much of the runoff with all but one remaining within their normal operating range. Inflows at Belwood Lake have been significantly exceeding discharge since Monday, and the water level in the reservoir is currently above the normal operating range for this time of year.
In order to begin returning the reservoir to normal operating levels, discharges from Shand Dam will be increased beginning Friday evening and held elevated throughout the weekend. It is anticipated that reservoir levels will be reduced by 0.4 m by Monday morning.
No flooding is expected; however, flows in the Grand River downstream of the dam will be higher than normal, increasing the safety risk throughout this reach.
Stay safe
The public is reminded to exercise extreme caution in and around the river. Flows are expected to be such that in-river angling downstream of the dam through Elora should be avoided throughout the weekend, as fast moving water can cause unsafe conditions.
The GRCA’s tubing operations at the Elora Gorge Conservation Area have also been cancelled throughout the weekend (Aug. 8 and 9). Those who have purchased tickets have been contacted directly regarding refunds.
Downstream of Elora, the difference in conditions will likely not be as significant, but river users should be aware of the slightly elevated water levels. Paddlers and anglers need to be aware that river flows can change quickly, and without warning.
This message will remain in effect until Monday, Aug. 10, 2020. Updated messages will be issued if necessary as conditions change.
