Over 12,500 people have been vaccinated at University of Guelph’s community vaccination clinic since it opened March 15.
Running in partnership with the Guelph Family Health Team (GFHT), the community clinic helped Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph (WDG) Public Health reach its milestone of vaccinating 25 per cent of eligible residents in the region with at least one dose by vaccinating approximately 600 people a day.
As of April 13, WDG Public Health has administered over 79,000 doses making the region one third in its way of vaccinating at least 75 per cent of the eligible population in the region by June.
“This is something to celebrate,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, medical officer of health and CEO of WDG Public Health, in a news release.
“Public Health and all local vaccination partners continue to work aggressively toward vaccinating our region as quickly as possible.”
U of G’s community vaccination clinic is held on the main floor of the University Centre and is staffed by the GFHT and U of G’s Hospitality Services. The clinic is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
WDG Public Health recently announced pre-registration for Phase 3 vaccinations which allows individuals of age 16 and older to preregister for their vaccination. However, local vaccination clinics will still follow the province’s vaccination framework and that means that those part of Phase 3 will likely not be vaccinated until June.
Mercer said pre-registering is the best way for residents to ensure they receive a vaccine as soon as possible.
