U of G one of nine universities working together to end unsanctioned street parties

Nine universities are working together to try to put a lid on illegal street parties that are often attended by thousands of students.

Wilfrid Laurier University hosted the meeting on Friday, attended by representatives and student leaders from Queen’s, McMaster, London, Ottawa, Brock, Carleton, Waterloo and Guelph universities.

Representatives from the cities of Waterloo, Kingston, Hamilton, and Guelph were also there.

The meeting addressed the increasing number of rowdy parties that often result in numerous calls to emergency services.

Guelph Police say Homecoming 2018 cost police $64,000, mostly in extra staffing. The city also spent thousdands on cleanup and road-safety measures.

Guelph Police issued a total of 178 open-liquor tickets.

Waterloo Regional Police estimated 22,000 people swarmed Ezra Avenue in Waterloo on St. Patrick's Day in 2018, with 619 charges laid.
