U of G prez still tops local 'Sunshine List'

The Ontario government has released its listing of public sector employees making over $100,000 a year in 2018 — better known as the Sunshine List.

The annual list covers public sector employees working in the Ontario government, municipalities, public utilities, colleges, universities, school boards and others who receive significant funding from the provincial government. More than 150,000 employees from across the province are featured, with total salaries amounting to more than $19 billion.

A total of 961 University of Guelph employees made the 2018 list, topped by president Franco Vaccarino at $423,648, with $32,745 in taxable expenses claimed. Vaccarino also tops the list of all Guelphites in the public sector salary disclosure.

The university’s past provost and vice-president, Academic Maureen Mancuso also made the list with a salary of $318,956.

Nicola Mercer, medical officer of health and CEO of Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Health Unit is listed to have a salary of $311,498, with $5,409 in taxable expenses claimed.

Guelph General Hospital president Marianne Walker is said to have a $323,297 salary, one of 69 employees on the list.

St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph president David Wormald is listed at $244,998. Walker claimed $1,207 in expenses, while Wormald claimed a total of $11,003.

Martha Rogers, director of education at Upper Grand District School Board, is listed to have a $244,720 salary with just $77.94 claimed in taxable expenses.

A total of 339 employees of the City of Guelph made $100,000 or more in 2018, an increase of 32 per cent over the previous year.

Former CAO Derrick Thomson topped the City’s list at $335,081. Last month it was announced that the City of Guelph and Thomson had “mutually agreed to part ways”.

A total of 166 staff of Guelph Police Service were named in the 2018 list, topped by an inspector earning $229,482. Former Chief Jeff DeRuyter was listed at $228,905, with $13,739 in taxable expenses claimed.
