After thousands of students were locked out of their school emails following last week's email breach, the Upper Grand District School Board says students can access their accounts again.

In a statement issued on Jan. 6, the UGDSB thanks everyone for their patience as they worked to clean-through the mass distribution of emails last week.

The decision to lock students out of their accounts stems from an incident on Dec. 31 when email responses containing inappropriate language were sent through the UGDSB student email list, which contains more than 5,000 student emails.

Officials say the incident was not caused by a computer virus or attack, but rather an individual who sent inappropriate content through the group list.

On Jan. 3, the school board announced they would be locking students out of their email accounts as they worked to delete the inappropriate emails. During this time, students still had access to Google Classroom and other online learning tools in their UGcloud accounts.

Further in their statement, the UGDSB adds that it regrets the nature of the incident and any disruption to service for students, and have taken significant additional steps to ensure the safety of their email platform.

With the clean-up complete, students can now access their Gmail accounts through the student portal.
