Ugh...ly Tuesday morning! (10 photos)

Several collisions and vehicles in ditches around Guelph

Conditions were ugly, miserable, and treacherous in the Guelph area Tuesday morning. Vehicles were in ditches at various places on the outskirts of the city.

Fife Road was blocked by Ontario Provincial Police cruisers from Whitelaw Road to Wellington County Road 32. An OPP officer on the scene said several collisions took place on Fife.

A large pickup truck entered the ditch at Fife and County Road 32, and about one kilometer down the road there were signs of the flashing lights of emergency vehicles.

Even with cleats strapped to boots, walking conditions were unstable. The shoulders of roadways were slick ice in places. And with the temperature stuck at the zero mark between 9-10 a.m., ice accumulated on trees, although not enough to bring down branches.

According to a morning CBC Radio news report, eastbound traffic was backed up on Highway 401 just west of Guelph, as ice buildup on the highway created a dangerous mess.

Umbrellas were out throughout the city Tuesday morning, and pedestrians stepped very carefully on sidewalks.

The temperature was slightly above zero by 11 a.m. and expected to stay there throughout the day.

Driving conditions in town and country will be hazardous throughout the day, as the rain continues.
