University of Guelph COVID outbreak declared over

The University of Guelph’s COVID-19 outbreak is over.

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health declared the outbreak over Wednesday, says a post on the U of G web site. The majority of cases had been cleared last week.

WDG Public Health declares an outbreak over if there are no new COVID cases and if over 14 days have passed since the most recent case.

The U of G lists no active cases on campus.

The campus outbreak was were in connection to two social gatherings that took place on Jan. 15 and Jan. 16 in the East Village Townhouses.

The cases had peaked late January and dramatically slowed down in the last week of January. Last week, there were 67 cases with 62 cases resolved.

U of G had really amped up its safety measures as cases escalated in January. It also increased fines and penalties for breaking COVID protocols such as failing to wear a mask, holding social gatherings, and failing to social distance.

As of last week, U of G issued 73 provincial COVID fines since the outbreak. The fines added up to $33,200, all under the Reopening Ontario Act. 

Initially, Campus Community Police was issuing provincial fines of $120 between Jan. 21 and Jan. 25. As cases escalated, the university increased its fines since Jan. 25 and began issuing fines of $880. Twelve of those fines were in connection to the gatherings on Jan. 15 and Jan. 16.
