The Upper Grand District School Board’s Director of Education, Martha Rogers, has been named the recipient of the Fred L. Bartlett Memorial Award.

The award is presented annual by the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) and honours “an active or retired member of the teaching profession for outstanding contribution to education in Ontario.” The award has been presented annually since 1970.

“We have long had a great working relationship with Dr. Rogers at the OPSBA Board of Directors table as the liaison for the Public Council of Ontario Directors of Education (PCODE),” said OPSBA President Cathy Abraham.

“Dr. Rogers is one-of-a-kind, and her more than 25 years as Director of Education at the UGDSB are truly impressive. Her deep understanding of the public education system and sustained commitment to honesty and integrity have always been clear, and we will greatly miss her voice when she retires later this year. I can’t think of a more fitting recipient for the Fred L. Bartlett Award.”

Rogers was nominated by UGDSB Trustee Linda Busuttil, with unanimous support from the Board of Trustees.

“Throughout all of the roles that Martha Rogers has held in her almost 50 years in public education, from teacher to Director, she has developed and sustained relationships rooted in honesty, integrity and a steadfast commitment to children and public education,” said Busuttil.

The nomination package for Rogers was supported by many working in education throughout the province, including individuals who are part of PCODE, the Council of Ontario Directors of Education (CODE), the Ministry of Education, various teacher and education staff federations and unions, and trustees.
